Home Grown Meat from the Cotswolds

Sudeley Hill Farm is a 900 acre mixed farm situated on the outskirts of Winchcombe in Gloucestershire.

The land is based around Sudeley Castle running up Sudeley Hill to 700 feet close to the Cotswold Way.

We are very much a family run farm with 3 generations currently working the farm.

 The farm supports a flock of around 1,000 ewes, a number of Gloucester Old Spot pigs and mainly Hereford and Aberdeen Angus heifers.

Sheep

The ewes lamb in 2 groups - some in February, indoors, and the remainder outdoors in April.

All the lambs are fattened on grass and home grown cereals or root crops in the winter. No in-feed additives or antibiotics are used in any of the feed rations just our home grown cereals, beans, roots and grass.

We use Texel and Charolais rams on Suffolk-cross ewes to give the best possible confirmation and shape in the carcase.

Our lamb is hung longer than that found in most supermarkets, from 7 to 10 days, to give the meat a better flavour.

Pork

The pigs are kept outdoors and free-range, and for most of the year have access to 'wallowing' areas which ensures the sows are contented.

For winter the pigs are housed in batches on straw.

We use the traditional Gloucester Old Spot breed which produce meat with a superior flavour and superb crackling on the meat!

Beef

The traditional Hereford cross cattle produce a carcase with some fat cover which gives the meat good cooking qualities and flavour.

All our beef is hung for 4 weeks to get the best flavour that is longer than most beef found in the supermarkets. You can taste the difference.

It is the hanging process which gives the meat greater flavour.
